چکیده

The performance of various access control protocols for high-speed, bit-serial, computer communication rings is studied. Local Area Computer Network (LACN) applications in which message packets are of fixed length and shorter than the total inherent propagation delay around the ring are the focus of attention. Token, slotted, and static and dynamic insertion rings are included in the study. In all cases, the transmitting station is responsible for removing its transmitted packet from the ring. Under this type of removal rule, it is possible for the stations to execute their access control algorithms with only a short, fixed, inline delay in each station. The insertion rings dynamically switch longer delays (insertion registers) into the ring when they are transmitting a packet. The transmitter-remove rule operates in such a way that hogging of the ring transmission facility by a subset of stations cannot occur. Expressions that approximate average transfer time as a function of utilization are derived for all ring types and are checked by simulation. For the assumed short-packet environment, it is found that token rings exhibit the slowest transfer times, while dynamic insertion rings are fastest.

Congestion Domain Boundaries in Resilient Packet Rings

In June 2004, the IEEE approved a new standard for Resilient Packet Rings (RPR). The standard is maintained in the 802 LAN/MAN Standards Committee, and is designated the standard number 802.17. In this paper, we analyze and discuss performance aspects of the Resilient Packet Ring fairness mechanism. We explain that, if the ring is not configured correctly, the fairness mechanism fails to stabil...

Proxy stripping: a performance-enhancing technique for optical metropolitan area ring networks

Metropolitan area ring networks can be categorized into metro edge and metro core rings. The traffic characteristics of metro edge and metro core rings are quite different. While metro edge rings exhibit a strongly hubbed traffic pattern (hot spots), traffic demands in metro core rings are much more uniform. We examine the throughput-delay performance of a buffer insertion ring with destination...

Dynamic Adaptation for High-Performance Data Transfers

Characteristics of the communication infrastructure determine which action should be taken when tuning data transfer operations in order to obtain high transfer rates. Local area networks and wide area networks have different characteristics, so they demonstrate diverse features in terms of congestion, failure rate, and latency. In most cases, congestion is not a concern in dedicated high bandw...

Cambridge Hslan Protocol Review. Presented at Ifip Wg6.1 Workshop, Ibm Ruschlikon

The Cambridge Fast Ring (CFR) local area network operates at 75 Mbit/s and forms the basis for much of our high-speed protocol research. The CFR mini-packet contains 16 bit source and destination addresses and 256 bits of data. Our current block assembly/disassembly and data-link protocol is UDL (Unison Data Link). This carries higher level protocols such as Unity RPC, local protocols for le tr...
